How To Keep Things Organized In Your Storage Unit

Blog

More than likely, your home or business has some clutter, regardless of where that clutter is located—on the desk, on the countertop, or in the closet. However, a lot of people will move their clutter out of their home or business and into a self-storage unit, where it has the potential to become an even larger mess than it was before. To ensure that this does not happen to you, here are a few storage organizations tip.

Begin With an Action Plan

If you move your belongings into a storage unit without a course of action in mind, you are going to quickly forget where you placed your belongings inside the unit. You need to create a list that consists of all of your items inside the unit and then place this list where you know you will be able to find it when you need it. Ultimately, similar items should be grouped together. In addition, you should ensure that you leave walkways throughout the unit so that you are able to easily grab any items that you need without having to move things around or step over boxes.

Break Down Large Items

You are likely going to be storing some large items like chairs, tables, and beds. Make sure to take the time to disassemble these items to make it easier to store them and to ensure that they don't take up as much room in the storage unit. Once these items have been fully disassembled, make sure that they are stored toward the back of the unit. Larger items need to be placed against the wall so they are out of the way. If you are unable to break down some of your tables, then use them as storage space. Smaller items can be placed beneath the table as well as on top of the table.

Label Your Stuff

Inside of a storage unit, you can easily lose track of what you placed in which box. Luckily, this is where labeling comes in. Use a pen and label the boxes in large print so that you can easily see the writing, especially if you place the box on a top shelf or toward the back. As long as you label your boxes correctly, you will be able to find the box you need quickly and easily.

When you need to declutter your home, renting a storage unit can help a lot. However, you want to ensure that your unit doesn't become cluttered as well. Therefore, follow the aforementioned organization tips, and you will be well on your way to an organized unit.
