When it comes to preparing for a big move, one thing you can never have enough of is packing materials. It's a good idea to buy new moving boxes to ensure they are sturdy enough to keep your items safe and secure, but you don't always have to buy new packing materials. Use this guide to help you find packing materials that are already in your home, and cut down on the costs of moving by reusing these items.
If you have old rolls of wrapping paper that have become torn or wrinkled over the years, use them to wrap your fragile items, such as glasses or plates when packing. Keep the paper tubes from the rolling paper too, as they can be cut and used as cushioning in your boxes. You can also use pieces of the tubes to separate glasses and stemware in larger moving boxes.
Sandwich bags can be used in many ways when you pack. Fill them with air to create cushioning for breakable items instead of buying rolls of bubble cushioning. The bags can also be used to organize hardware for disassembled furniture, or for packing away small bottles of soaps or shampoos so they don't leak inside of your boxes.
Save cartons from six-packs of beer or soda before your move. These can be placed in your moving boxes to separate stemware for easy organization. Cut off the top handle portion so you can stack multiple cartons on top of each other in the box. If you will be packing away condiments from your refrigerator, these cartons can also make it easy to pack and organize them in your box or cooler.
Plastic wrap can be used to prevent bottles from leaking. Simply remove the cap from soap, shampoo, or other liquids, and place a piece of plastic wrap over the opening. Place the cap back on, and you have a durable seal against leaks. Wrap bundles of silverware or cooking utensils together to keep them from moving in your boxes during the move. You can also use plastic wrap to cover dresser drawers so you can move your dressers without having to unpack them.
Garbage bags are ideal for large fabric items that would take up an entire moving box on their own. For example, you can fill a garbage bag with pillows, or you can create your own moveable "bed bags" with all of the bedding for each bed in a separate trash bag. Some professional moving companies may have rules against moving items packed in trash bags, however, bags filled with these types of items are typically light, and they can be loaded easily in your private vehicle.
Before you start purchasing packing supplies, take an inventory of these items you may already have in your home, and put them to work for you as you pack up all the rooms in your home. If you find yourself in need of additional packing supplies, talk to your professional movers about purchasing boxes, packing supplies, and other moving-related items.

About a year ago, I realized that my own space was tremendously cluttered, so I started looking for a storage unit that could help me out. Within a few short weeks, I was able to find a space that was clean, well-maintained, and incredibly sturdy for my belongings, and it made a huge difference. I was able to move out a lot of my belongings and make my home a lot cleaner, and it really took a lot of stress off of my plate. Check out this blog for more information.
