Find Colored Plastic Bins
One of the first things you will want to do is to buy a lot of plastic bins with lids, but make sure that you are buying a variety of colors. Basically, you want a single color to be assigned to a single category of items. This way, upon a quick glance, you will be able to visually locate the section of the storage unit where the item you are looking for would be. You can assign a different color to categories like the kitchen, living room, personal, gardening, and bathroom. To make sure that you do not forget what color is for what category, you will want to create a little cheat sheet for yourself. Securely tape it to the interior wall of the storage unit near the door so it is easily seen.
Get Creative With Labeling
Besides having the color code to use when trying to find the right area to start looking for your stuff, you will want to take it a step further and add a creative label to the bins. Start by writing a list of the things that are within the bin. You could also take a picture of the inside of the bin, print it off of your home computer, and then tape that along with the written list along the side of the bin where it can be easily seen. Even though the picture is not going to show a lot of detail for everything that is in there, you might find that that small visual can help trigger your memory of packing that bin, and that can help you recall more about what items are in there.
There are a lot of things you can do to organize your self storage unit, especially if this is a long-term storage solution for you. When it comes down to it, everyone needs to clear out their home and make room for more important things.
